Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at action@tomgreencitizens.org if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Tom Green County Citizens Coalition is a grassroots, bipartisan organization made up entirely of volunteers concerned about proposed industrial-scale data center development in and around rural Tom Green County and surrounding West Texas communities.

Our group formed after residents learned of proposed large-scale data center developments targeting unincorporated rural land in our area. Many residents became concerned about potential impacts to water, infrastructure, wildlife, property values, agriculture, and overall rural quality of life.

No. We are not anti-growth or anti-business. We support responsible development that includes transparency, proper infrastructure planning, environmental review, and meaningful community involvement.

Industrial-scale data centers require enormous amounts of energy, infrastructure, cooling systems, and in many cases large-scale water usage. Rural communities are often not equipped for projects of this scale, especially in drought-prone areas with limited infrastructure and limited local oversight.

Many proposed projects are targeting unincorporated areas because counties in Texas have significantly less authority than cities when it comes to zoning and land-use regulation. Residents are increasingly finding themselves caught between local government and state agencies while trying to determine who has authority to protect rural communities.

Community concerns include:

  • Public health during and after construction
  • Groundwater depletion and water usage
  • Floodplain and drainage impacts
  • Noise pollution
  • Light pollution and dark sky impacts
  • Wildlife and habitat disruption
  • Infrastructure strain and road impacts
  • Property values
  • Emergency service capacity
  • Environmental and air quality concerns
  • Increased traffic, industrial activity, road deterioration, and public safety concerns along FM 2335, US 67, and surrounding rural roadways
  • Long-term changes to rural quality of life

No. Many concerns being raised involve real regulatory, environmental, infrastructure, and permitting questions that require further review and transparency. Our coalition encourages fact-based discussion, research, and responsible information sharing.
